“Afterlight” by Hamilton, Canada-based composer and multi-instrumentalist SØLYS (Michael Chambers) is an introspective, minimalist piano piece. The piano is supported by a rich atmosphere of ambient field recordings and a deep backing bass synth. The perfect backdrop for studying or deep concentration.
Like so many others, I’m feeling the malaise of lockdown. I wanted “Afterlight” to capture the collective sense of solitude so many of us are feeling, and juxtapose that with field recordings of children playing. One could hear it as a memory of things that were, or a dream of how things could become. I leave it up to the listener to decide how they want to hear this piece.
