Ambient 1: Bluewater, by Hamilton, Canada-based composer and multi-instrumentalist SØLYS (Michael Chambers), unfolds as a transcendent blend of ambient and neoclassical textures. This short collection offers a meditative journey through the fluidity of sound, with piano and ambient guitar creating waves of introspective calm. Synth pads extend an uplifting canopy, under which listeners find a space of freedom and contemplation. The electric guitar, piano, and synthesizer interlace to evoke the serene expansiveness of nordic ambient landscapes, making this release a beacon of tranquil reflection.
Inspired by Brian Eno’s ambient releases, “Ambient 1: Bluewater” is my first venture into generative music. Bluewater emerged from a blend of digital tape loops of different lengths repeating in regular yet unpredictable patterns. I found this regular/irregular soundscape felt like waves lapping on beach. These loops inspired a simple piano part and lap steel guitar — I’d found a melody within the endless cycle of sound! Bluewater is a nod to those quiet introspective moments. The ‘Lakeside’ edition features waves recorded close to my hometown on Georgian Bay. For me, Bluewater is an example of curiosity, randomness and emotion coming together to create something new. –Michael Chambers (aka SØLYS)
