“Breaking My Rules” by Toronto-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Shannon Chapman is a sassy neo soul-jazz bop chronicling the struggle of breaking a bad habit and letting go of that which is not good for us. Angular melodies and punchy percussion are juxtaposed by soft layers of Rhodes and brassy synths, while nods to 70s jazz fusion peek through during the bridge.
“’Breaking My Rules’ was inspired by my own lifelong struggle with bad habits. When it’s particularly bad, I try to make these rules like ‘Shannon, you’re going to go a whole day without doing this thing.’ And because it’s kind of an unconscious habit, I end up breaking my rules and having to start over again each day. It’s a bit of a melancholy song, but rather than thinking about all the times I’ve failed, I try to treat each day as a new opportunity to overcome an obstacle.” –Shannon Chapman
