On Orion’s Belt, SØLYS explores the fluid intersection of electronica, neoclassical, and IDM, crafting a sound both elusive and immersive. Rooted in drifting piano motifs, the EP weaves lush synthesizers, intricate drum patterns, and evolving textures that evoke a sense of weightless motion. The playful tonal shifts and unpredictable phrasing mirror its inspiration—an exploration of shifting musical “homes” that challenge resolution. The result is a collection of pieces that feel both nostalgic and exploratory, blurring the boundaries between SØLYS and his alter ego, moon:and:6, in a seamless dialogue of sound.
With Orion’s Belt, I wanted to explore the idea of musical weightlessness—how music can drift between tonal centers without ever fully settling. “Mintaka” started as a solo piano composition, but as I worked on it, I realized it lived in the space between my two musical identities, SØLYS and moon:and:6. The challenge became finding a way to merge those voices into something cohesive. The result is a track that feels fluid and open-ended, with shifting harmonies, evolving textures, and rhythmic patterns that never quite repeat the same way.
