“Voyager 1” is a mesmerizing auditory expedition, where Canadian multi-instrumentalist and producer moon:and:6 (Michael Chambers) ventures into the emotional depths of space travel and cosmic solitude. This piece marks Chambers’ first exploration into vocal-centric compositions, with lyrics embodying the perspective of the Voyager space probe, eloquently bidding farewell to humanity as it drifts into the unknown realms of interstellar space.

The track opens with glitchy electronic textures, ingeniously sampling the analog encoding from Voyager’s iconic “golden record.” This sets the tone for a journey that balances tension and resolution, particularly in the vocal phrases that narrate the probe’s introspective farewell. The sonic landscape then shifts, embracing a serene, space-pop ambience. The use of synthesizers, processed through sequenced filters, creates a pulsating, bubble-like soundscape, encapsulating the frictionless, weightless travel of Voyager through space.

Instruments like the electric guitar, Fender Rhodes, and a mix of drum kits and machines add complexity to the track. The drum loop, inspired by the duality of Tortoise records, is both clean and distorted, with nods to iconic 80s drum sounds reminiscent of a LinnDrum or SP1200. “Voyager 1” is not just a song, but a sonic narrative that marries space-age wonders with human emotions of longing and discovery, making it a unique and evocative piece in moon:and:6’s discography.

I wanted to write something from the perspective of the Voyager 1 probe. There’s something sad and beautiful about the story of the Voyager probes. They were so integral to our understanding and knowledge of the outer planets, and now they’re on a journey to forever float through interstellar space. By 2030 their power units will be dead, and they’ll be so far away we’ll lose all contact with them. There’s something sad about that. But at the same time, the probes are loaded with information about Earth and about humans. There’s a chance that our Voyager probes will be humanity’s first introduction to alien life.
